Mass protests begin

Yangon

Yangon

In the period following the military’s takeover, peaceful protests erupted on the streets throughout Myanmar – the largest and loudest in Yangon, the heart of dissent. For just over a week, protesters marched the streets chanting pro-democratic slogans, holding sit-ins and painting murals on the streets (which are still visible from space).

The three-fingered salute became a sign of the protest.
