Myanmar Witness has documented numerous fires in Kawlin between February and March 2024.

This evidence has been collected to produce a map of possible fire-damaged areas (right), indicating that a large percentage of the town has been razed to the ground.

The fires follow fighting over the town between SAC forces, who are accused of setting the fires, and allied anti-SAC forces who captured the town in November 2023.

The town was the first district capital to be taken by anti-SAC forces in the dry zone after the launch of Operation 1027, with the resistance flag being raised over the general administration office of Kawlin on 6 November 2024.
